Dear Men and Women of the Media Breakfast Club of Los Angeles,
As we pray to pay our last respects to Fred, I thank him for all the goodness he has shared with us. He was a staffmember of the "Philippine Collegian," the tabloid of the University of the Philipppines when its editor-in-chief was former Senator Leonardo Perez, who was succeeded by Dr. Augusto Caesar Espiritu, former ambassador to Germany. Fred even then was already admired for his brief, philosophical poems, and was recognized as "the" poet of the national College Editors Guild of the Philippines. Later, he became active in the Alumni of the CEG, and again was popular both for his journalistc and literary talents.
He gave me permission to reprint one of his poems in "Selected Philippine Prose and Poetry"-- an anthology of contemporary writings. It was adopted as either textbook or reference in high school and college.
I had a brief conversation with him when I passed by California around 1985, and he told me he had put up a bakery. Now I understand that he was then already convinced that "walang tinapay kung hindi aalsa ang masa."--now a poetic recipe to solve the hunger of the masses.
A bouquet of prayers to Fred, and sympathy to his family.
Salamat.
Lourdes
