Rudy Torres wrote on Facebook: "Just like the Blacks who use the "n" word freely amongst themselves, We Filipino teens in the late '50s-early '60s referred to ourselves as "Flips"... but ONLY amongst ourselves. Whites who "accidentally" said it were stared at by us, causing much discomfort on both sides... as I recall... Pinoy is more commonly used in the Philippines than here, where here, non-Filipinos seem indifferent, probably because we're not yet included in the "mainstream" culture, who treat us as outsiders. IMHO"
