We Don't Change (co-authored by Migs Bassig)
Change. Change pervades the world of the Filipino, and it has become, so to speak, a norm of life. It dictates the lives of our people. As such, Filipinos have been - for a lack of a better term - forced to go with it or be left behind. Eat or be eaten. Hunt or be [...]
Matabungkay offers Gimik promo!
The sun's suffocating heat has all but exited and overcast clouds have taken center stage. Yes, the seasons have changed - and for all intents in purposes - beach season has come and gone with it. Then again, it isn't against the law to still get your sun and sand fix at this time of the [...]
Rediscover Matabungkay
In our lifetime, there are memories that can't seem to escape our collective subconscious. From the people we've met; the places we've visited; and the experiences we've encountered, such memories carve a lasting impression on all of us. The mere mention of the name Matabungkay is enough to drive anyone down their own path to [...]
Crawl out of your hole, bookworm!
As a book lover, April 21 is a day that I've encircled in my calendar many moons ago. Unbeknownst to many folks, that day, at least here in the Philippines, is the International Day of the Book. In the spirit of all readers, Insituto Cervantes will hold a series of events open to anyone who wishes [...]
The Beauty Up North
photo by Pong Ignacio "Good things happen to those who wait." Clich as it may sound, the proverb holds true for anyone who wishes to visit Ilocos. 13 hours away from Manila, the travel is long as it is tiring. But if you're the patient type, the beauty of Ilocos sure makes any form of waiting [...]
National Make-Out Day
AP photo/Pat Roque If you're shopping at the Mall of Asia and you happen to notice thousands of people making out at the same time, don't worry, you didn't stumble upon a seedy porn taping. What it is, rather, is Close-Up's Lovapalooza.  In the spirit of Valentine's, local toothpaste brand Close-Up is staging Lovapalooza 4, a kissing festival [...]
Manila Hotel
The Manila Hotel is one of the historical landmarks in the Philippines. It used to be called the “Aristocrat of the Orient” because many high-profile political figures and even royalty had stayed in its quarters. The Manila Hotel was constructed in 1912. The Manila Hotel is located at the heart of Manila itself; it is with [...]
The Cross on the Mountaintop
Its place in the pecking order of prominent national landmarks is not as high as the likes of Rizal Park, Quezon Circle, and the Banaue Rice Terrace. But when it comes to historical significance, the Dambana ng Kagitingan (The Shrine of Valor) in Bataan towers above its counterparts. Located at the summit of Mt. Samat in Pilar, Bataan [...]
Largest Mall in Asia
After the SM Mall of Asia in Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City opened its doors last year, it redefined the shopping habits of Filipinos everywhere. Dubbed as the largest mall this side of the globe, it became a must-go-to destination for Filipinos everywhere. You will be astounded by the sheer size of the mall. One day is not enough [...]

Hairspray The Musical Live on Stage at Manila
I have to admit something. I’m absolute in loathe with Zac Efron. I mean, come on! He’s so not a good actor. He can sing, I’ll give him that, but act? Eh? With one expression on his face? Meh. It’s probably the reason why I hate High School Musical to death. And it’s possibly the reason why [...]
Vince's Life: The Next Chapter - Getting Over Andrea
Technology, you just have to love it. Halfway around the world, and we could still find ways to hurt each other. Vince O. Vince’s Life: The Next Chapter - Getting Over Andrea is the sequel [...]
Laughs and Gasps
I toyed with the idea of attending this show since I learned about it from Marcelle (the one in white in the poster below). Heck, I think I will. But first, I have to call my momma and ask for moolah. Elation was a blast, but it set me back P500 for the two tickets [...]

EDIT: CPK did redeem itself. Read about the 2nd visit on my Multiply. I’m a rather stingy person. I think I got it from my dad, who’s makunat to the bones except when it comes to TVs and his much-loved vehicle. The only places you’d see me spend my money freely are bookstores and [...]

I’m going! Everyone who loves chocolates, booze, and fun should [...]
Burnout
It’s quite amusing how burnt-out I feel when I’ve been my usual bum self for the past couple of weeks. Even my mom’s untimely confinement to the hospital hasn’t fazed me to exhaustion like it did four years ago. My brother has been less of an ass lately, possibly the effect of having to spend [...]
Phone Problem. Help?
Okay, during my first night at the hospital caring for my mom, I accidentally swiped my Treo 680 from the visitor’s couch (where I was sleeping) to the cold hard floor. I had all the lights turned off in the room so I didn’t notice it until after I found it in [three] pieces beside [...]
My Mom is Back from the Hospital

Pinoy Cook: Home-cooking rocks!
Recipes for simple and delicious home-cooked meals
Marinating a whole chicken
Marinating a whole chicken... my husband, Speedy, cooked tequila pork loin and followed the cooking instructions in the cookbook to the letter. He needed Ziploc bags, I gave him one, and how he marinated the pork loins gave me an idea. The bags are large enough to hold a whole chicken, so, why not? It saves a lot of space in the fridge (the bags can be stacked one on top of the other), the meat need not be submerged in the marinade, and turning is a breeze -- just turn the entire bag and that's it.

Mom & Tina's Bakery Cafe
Mom & Tina's Oreo cheesecakeToday was a day for shopping for curtain fabrics and curtain rods. After completing my purchases at Fabric Warehouse in Libis, Quezon City, we proceeded to Causeway for a very late lunch. Dimsum mostly, although my daughter Sam ordered a shrimp wonton soup for herself. Disappointed that Causeway didn't serve egg tarts, we decided to have our dessert elsewhere. At Mom & Tina's, my husband suggested, which was a short five-minute drive away. We've never eaten there before although we're not totally unfamiliar with the bakery's products. When friends came over to the house a couple of weeks ago, they brought a tray of Mom & Tina's profiteroles, we liked it very much and my husband went to Mom & Tina's a few days later, bought a box of profiteroles and brought it home.

Chicken and mushrooms pasta
Spaghetti with chicken, brown button mushrooms, vegetables and pestoMy younger daughter, Alex, woke me up on Saturday morning with an announcement that she wanted pasta for lunch. With pesto, she said, and chicken. I said, sure, and figured I might as well go all the way and add mushrooms and a medley of vegetables too. She helped with the cooking, grated the cheese, cut the mushrooms and tomatoes, and did some stirring, then it was on to a great lunch. Too bad the man of the house was out at work and had to miss the spaghetti with chicken, brown button mushrooms, vegetables and pesto.

Twilight movie thoughts
Seeing your favorite fictional characters from a book come to life in a movie is magical. The first time Edward Cullen appeared on-screen, I couldn’t help but give a silent squeal. “Twilight Viewing Ediquette.” Here are ten (and a half) rules so that you and others can fully enjoy the Twilight viewing experience. It’s an amusing video by mysterytwilightvoice. There were days in grade school and high school when I would spend a whole lunch hour in the library because I didn't have anyone to spend lunch with. Sugar Series December 2008: Ann Puno's Choc-Nut Cake (An ongoing series)
My Sugar Series (December 2008) is made up of desserts that I've enjoyed recently. Because the holidays spell sweet excess, impress the people you love with any of the following desserts. They're guaranteed to make an impression on them as they did on me. Ayala Alabang is a treasure trove of home bakers waiting to [...]

A Meal So Good It's Up There On The Astral Plane
In my Great Photos of Great Dishes post, I included a dish from Astralis, their Parisian scrambled eggs with foie gras (P480). It's part of a meal that I have there that still resonates in my memory even a month later. One of the newest joints that line Rockwell's Lopez Drive, Astralis aims to embody casual [...]

Boracay 2008: New Food Faves
After four days in Boracay, I'm convinced that there isn't a single bad meal to be had here. Doin’ the hula Every restaurant that my family and I go to (10 adults, 3 kids) is a total hit. Great Photos of Great Dishes (Non-Dessert)
In the course of a year, my computer's hard drive accumulates quite a number of food photos; so much so that there are times when I imagine that an internal rupture is imminent, and the next time I turn my computer on, it'll spew forth a salvo of disjointed images. Ah, such is the imagination (and [...]
Sweet Pampanga
My sisters and I grew up going to Pampanga — my mom is from there and we would visit my lolo every weekend. Little did I (we!) know that the then-quiet, mall-less city would bloom into a culinary destination — or has it always been and I was the one who became more aware? Well [...]
Bobby, Not Bourdain
Seems like local foodie-dom worked themselves up in a tizzy when news dispersed late last week that chef-writer-world nomad extraordinaire Anthony Bourdain was in town.
