A SLEW OF COMMUNITY EVENTS THIS JUNE
Aguinaldo Foundation Holds Own Celebration of Philippine Independence Day
A festival of songs and dances at the Mira Mesa Recreation Center on Saturday (June2) kicked off the month-long celebration of Philippine independence by San Diego County's Filipino neighborhood and community organizations.
The event was initiated by the Aguinaldo Foundation, the community organization headed by Zeny Mascardo-Ravelo, which is undertaking the building of a Performing Arts Center & Museum in San Diego.
The Filipino community in general has lined up activities to commemorate the 109th anniversary of the day General Emilio Aguinaldo declared freedom from Spain's more than three centuries of colonial rule. On that day, June 12, 1898, in Kawit, Cavite, he established the first Philippine republic.
Other events are:
- June 6, Wednesday: "Celebrating Filipino Americans: Voice from Within" by the One Vision One Voice Movement which will be held on June 6 at the San Diego City Council Chambers, 202 "C" Street, 12th floor, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. This event is open to the public with light lunch served free.
Voices From Within: The Pearl of the Orient Seas is a compilation of cultural traditions and heritage celebrations carried over to the US from the Philippines. Readings from book chapters include: Chef Larry’s " Pressure Cooker - Remembering My Roots"; Dr. Juanita Santos Nacu’s “From Heart to Heart: The Journey of a Culture”; Joseph Roley-Arzaga’s “For Richer or For Poorer”; Amy Saroca’s “The Longest Grill”; and Dr. Ed Gamboa’s “Medical Missions: A Drop in the Ocean?”
Voices From Within: The Land of the Free is a compilation of literary contributions from Filipinos of all background sharing their perspectives of life in the US. Readings from book chapters include: Joe Mendoza’s "I Didn't Want My Kids To Be A Barber"; Cecelia Linayao’s “For My Father”; Michelle Mendoza’s “My Beautiful Flat Nose”; Mimi Estrada’s "From There to Here, and then Back for a Moment" and San Diego Police Captain Cesar Solis’ “The Other End of the Law”.
Also included in the program is a poem by Dr. Manny Sevilla, “isang Pangarap, Isang Tinig” (One Vision One Voice) and a short essay by Dr. Maria Lourdes Reyes, “Kapwa Kong Pinoy: Dare Not Dare Now”. For more information: or ; Tel. 619-988-2210; www.ovov.org.
- June 9 & 10, Friday & Saturday: The House of the Philippines in Balboa Park (at Presidents Way and Pan American Plaza), commemorates Philippine Independence Day with two events.
On June 9 from 1 to 3 pm, Joseph Allen Ramirez, a student at the University of California, San Diego majoring in Ethnic Studies, will present "Philippine Alphabets," a hands-on, all-ages workshop on how to write one or more of the precolonial scripts devised and used by native Filipinos.
On June 10, the House presents its annual Lawn Program featuring Filipino costumes, music, and dance. Filipino food will be sold as a fundraiser at the Lawn Program, benefiting House activities.
- June 9, Saturday: Philippine Faire at Kimball Park in National City from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. highlighted by a parade under the auspices of the Council of Philippine American Organizations (COPAO) and the City of National City. Admission is free.
- June 12, Tuesday: The annual reenactment of the independence declaration by General Emilio Aguinaldo and the unfurling of the Philippine tricolor will be held at 4460 Ocean View Blvd., San Diego, the traditional venue for the celebration started by the late patriot Carlos R. Linayao.
This celebration is the most authentic because of its strict adherence to the actual events that played out in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898. Up to the time he passed away in 2006, Linayao had insisted on commemorating independence on the very minute, hour and day it was declared, saying physical discomfort and political inconvenience should never be an excuse to mark such a sacred day on the same day it took place. The Cavite Association of Southern California headed by Tony Javier is the main sponsor.
- June 16, Saturday: Philippine Day in San Diego, a commemoration of the 109th Philippine independence anniversary and the 146th birthday of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal sponsored by the Philippine Library & Historical Heritage Museum at 536 Fifth Ave., at the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown.
- June 30, Saturday: The Serra Mesa/Kearny Branch Library on 9005 Aero Drive commemorates Philippine independence day as it presents an hour of Philippine cultural dances by the PASACAT Asian Pacific Art Company starting at 12 noon. For more info, please call (858) 573-1396.
