This appeal (to the Filipino- and Asian-American communities and the www.mabuhayradio.com readers) has three primary objectives:
1) Support Dr. Emelita Breyer in her case against Georgia State University and Board of Regents of University of Georgia;
2) Develop a platform and organize a SWAT-like team that will screen and manage cases like this as well as other cases affecting the community on a sustained basis; and,
3) Forge alliances with organizations and individuals with similar objectives and experience in dealing with discrimination and marginalization based on race, gender, culture, religion and economic conditions.
The Healthcare Coalition Institute (HCI) will post materials most pertinent in meeting these objectives including but not limited to statements from supporters of these objectives. For this posting, please refer to Dr. Emelita Breyer's appeal below which includes the chronology of events, a series of next steps and other references.

Dr. Emelita Breyer's Appeal
I am appealing to the Filipinos and the citizens of the world represented here in US to help us in ensuring that justice is served through the implementation of just law in this country. Discrimination prevails and hides behind the veil of unjust laws and people, most especially here in the South. The power of the people has inevitably been the only force that can make this change. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King stated that "Unjust Law is No Law at All".
The glass ceiling for Asian Americans exists despite the equal rights bill enacted in 1965 for the African Americans and supposedly to other minority groups. The discrimination against Asian Americans, especially women and our children in academia has been documented in several articles and books and yet very little attention and support have been given to so many individual cases. Most of them cannot even go to court due to financial limitations. My case represents not only the individual discrimination cases that are currently going on in this country but also issues in our individual communities that impact our children, young professionals, medical and health professionals and most specially our elders. By fighting to win my case, we can then provide an example that will lead to winning other battles such as equal benefits for our Filipino veterans, fair contract agreement and working conditions for our Filipino health professional contractors here in US, fair college admissions for our children and equal salary and promotion to our Asian American Professional.
I am requesting the support of all Filipinos, Asian Americans and concerned citizens of this country to rise up as one people and one voice to eliminate once and for all the presence of this law that allows discrimination and practices that divide our country and its people. We need your support to continue on our fight in this case against The University System of Georgia and Georgia State University. One case can make a difference. You can make a difference. Dr. Emelita Breyer (an Asian American with Filipino and Chinese heritage) is formerly an Assistant Professor at School of Chemistry of Georgia State University (GSU). She was with GSU since 1999 and was denied for tenure in October, 2005. Her work in GSU has been described by distinguished scientists in her field as high quality as well as "groundbreaking". Her work in the health-related field has global impact.

What is/are the issue(s)?
A senior faculty prejudged Dr. Breyer's tenure application based on race and wrote negative comments on before she even had a chance in reviewing Dr. Breyer's application for promotion and tenure. Another faculty who was not allowed to participate in the review of Dr. Breyer's tenure application due to conflict of interest, lobbied against Dr. Breyer's promotion. After defeating Dr. Breyer's tenure application, the same faculty stated that there are "too many Chinese" in the faculty as the reason why he didn't vote to hire a new Asian faculty candidate. Racial discriminatory behavior by these two faculty members have been documented for several years. Dr. Breyer is seeking legal assistance and support from the community to fight for justice and show that one person can make a difference by standing up against this injustice.
