The Media Breakfast Club (MBC), in cooperation with the Filipino-American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA), will hold the Fourth Philippine Presidents' Day (PPD) at the FACLA Social Hall on Monday, March 17, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The FACLA is located at 1740 W. Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90026.
The PPD is the annual ceremony to observe the death anniversary of President Ramon Magsaysay and all the other departed Filipino Presidents. It was started on March 17, 2005, at the FACLA by Bobby M. Reyes, the MBC founder.
The event begins with an interfaith service. There will be community singing of Christian hymns and patriotic songs. Romy P. Borje, the dean of Filipino-American columnists, will render “How Great Thou Art” and “I Believe,” aside from singing the Philippine national anthem.
Doming Rosacia, the prime mover of the Philippine Nurses magazine, will then talk on his family’s personal experiences with President Diosdado Macapagal and speak about Cong Dadong’s career from a member of Philippine Congress to the presidency. The Philippine Consulate General has been invited to deliver a message to commemorate the lives of the Philippine Presidents. There will be other speakers who will talk briefly about their personal anecdotes about the departed Philippine Presidents. Then a simple lunch and dancing will follow.
The Media Breakfast Club (MBC), in cooperation with the Filipino-American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA), will hold next a forum from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the same Social Hall. The topic will be the New Asian Town of Houston, Texas, as a model for developing the FACLA property and the Historic Filipinotown.
The presentation will be done by Keith Truong, president of the GBI International. James Nguyen, the GBI International chairman and CEO, will also be present to answer any inquiry about the New Asian Town development and the proposed Philippine Center in Houston, Texas. The Vietnamese-American developers want also to meet with the Filipino-American press about their advertising needs in making the Asian-American community aware of their Asian Town project in Houston and other development projects in Southern California.
After the GBI International presentation, the MBC will cosponsor a reception and fundraiser for Councilman Antonio “Tony” Cartagena of the City of Walnut. The United Fil-Am Political Action Group is the main sponsor for the Tony Cartagena event, which will be from 5:00 p.m. until late in the evening. Councilmember Cartagena has been the mayor of Walnut twice, as the position rotates among the five elected councilmembers.
Mr. Cartagena is the second Filipino-American city chief executive in the San Gabriel Valley, after Atty. Monte Manibog was elected the mayor of Monterrey Park in the 1980s. The election for three seats in the Walnut City Council will be on April 8, 2008.
Fender Santos, a vice president of the FACLA, is the overall chairman of the United Fil-Am Political Action Group. Mr. Santos is acting of course in his personal capacity and not as a FACLA officer and director.
