"Fish Shortage: The Next Crisis” Is the KK! Topic on DZRH-AM. April 9,

Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (Manila Time)

Energy crisis. Rice crisis. Is fish crisis the next one? Most probably, if we do not heed the warning of those familiar with the fisheries sector: Unless we do our act together and address the issues (polluted waters being one of them), we might end up without fish soon.

More than 60% of the Philippine population of about 88 million live in coastal areas. For them, fishing is a major source of livelihood. But, in recent years, they, as well as the commercial fishing companies, are hurting. The contribution of fishing to total GDP has been decreasing, from 5% in the early nineties to less than 2% since 1997. Has the fishing industry become a sunset industry? How did we get into this trouble, 10 years after the Philippine Fisheries Code was approved? What have we done since then? What must we do now to save the fisheries sector and ensure that we shall have fish to eat and share with others?

Hear answers to these and other questions on the fisheries sector in Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!),  DZRH-AM radio, on April 9, Wed., 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Featured guests are Gov. Miguel Dominguez, Province of Sarangani and founding director, Fisheries and Aquatic Board of the Philippines; Dr. Westly Rosario, interim executive director, National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and Chief, BFAR National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center; and Manny Paterno, chairman, Lobbying and Advocacy, NGOs for Fisheries Reform, Inc. Hosting the talakayan in conversational Tagalog is Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia.

From today's headlines, it looks like GMA herself has already taken over the Department of Agriculture, as the rice crisis opens the floodgates to other agricultural-and-fisheries crises, so where does this leave Arthur Yap: 1) GMA should fire Yap for incompetence and negligence. mahirap ito para kay GMA afterall Arthur Yap replaced Jocjoc Bolante as the First Couple's money bagger, but at the extent naman na ipinahamak siya e more than justified na. 2) the Senate must investigate not only Yap's incompetence but also his involvement in importation and smuggling that have been the only agenda of the department since the 2004 fertilizer scam. ang maganda nito, GMA used the rice crisis to attempt to snowball Lozada from his campaign against corruption, little knowing that this issue is far more deeper and broader than broadband, because it involves the people's survival directly.
