A down-to-earth Filipino bagged two of the most prestigious awards in the Emirates Businesswoman’s Award (EBWA) held on May 20, 2008.
The finale of
the most-prestigious award being given to both professionals and business
owners for expatriates and the valiant women in the United Arab Emirates successfully kicked off its 6th year. The awards were under the
patronage of His Highness, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman, Emirates
Group, and president, Dubai Department of Civil Aviation. The Emirates
Businesswomen's Award is also supported by the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) and the Emirates Businesswomen's Council. The event was attended by His
Highness, Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Rashid Al Maktoum and various dignitaries
from diverse countries including Hon. Atty. Virginia P. Calvez, the Philippine
labor attaché in Dubai.
The Filipinos have once again proven their world-class leaderships and their
utmost-stunning professionalisms in work and in community service in the United Arab Emirates. A Filipino woman, the pride of
Filipinos in Dubai and one of the founders of Filipino Digerati Association
(Digerati), Engineer Mary Jane Alvero-Al Mahdi, bagged two of the uppermost
prestigious awards, for Professional Women (First Runner Up) and the Criterion
Award for Leadership.
The criteria for the awards include leadership; future goals and financial
performance; business, professional and career achievements; community
contributions; and participation and innovation. The EBWA 2008 aims to
recognize and reward the exemplary contributions of women in the business and
professional sectors of the UAE. The original 84 women contenders were from
various government and blue chip companies embracing managerial positions to
chief operating officers to business owners. The EBWA 2008 aims to recognize
and reward the exemplary contributions of women in the business and
professional sectors of the UAE. The award has generated strong response from
business and professional women.

Saeed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum handed out on Tuesday the awards to
eight winners of the Emirates Business Women Award (EBWA) 2008 in Business and
Professional categories at a gala dinner ceremony held in Grand Hyatt Dubai.
Paris Gallery was appreciated for their support as a Gift Sponsor of the Award,
according to a press release.
Shaikh Saeed also gave a special recognition to Princess Haya bint Al Hussein,
wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and
Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai; for her dedication and
contribution to the development of women.
Raja Al Gurg accepted the trophy on behalf of Princess Haya. Garnering the top
EBWA 2008 award during the ceremony was Maryam Sharaf, the Overall EBWA
Professional category winner.
Also awarded were Mary Jane Alvero - Al Mahdi, runner-up in the Professional
category; Criterion winner Shaikha Azza bin Rashid Al Nuaimi (Leadership);
Criterion Winner Dr Nawal Al Hosany (Business, Professional and Career
Achievement; Criterion winner Maryam Al Jallaf (Business, Professional and
Career Achievement); Criterion winner Haleh Janani (Future Goals and Financial
Performance); Criterion Winner Monira Safar (Community Contributions and
Participation); and Criterion Winner Mona Al Kandi (Innovation).
Organisers DQG and Shell, also gave certificates of appreciation to the
sponsors, supporters, assessors and jury members of EBWA 2008.
