One of our basic rights is
the right to sufficient food. That is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Yet, about 10-million hunger-related deaths happen every year in
the world, half of the dead are children.
The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that 100-million more people will join those below the hunger threshold. That will make the number of hungry people in the world almost one-billion (spelled with a “B”).
With the recent food shortages and the dramatic increases in food prices globally, food sufficiency has become more than a right to be upheld. It has become an emergency that must be addressed immediately. In the Philippines, food shortages and high food prices could create havoc on our population and on our country's sustainability.
What are the causes of sudden food shortages and price increases? There is no consensus on this point globally. But environmental degradation is one of them.
There is also no international organization or country that has devised measures that will ensure the adequacy of food supplies and the reduction of food prices globally, especially for developing counties, such as the Philippines. So there is no point in looking for an external savior or in wasting time to blame each other. We must all work together to search for and apply solutions to ensure food sufficiency for our people.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has developed and is now implementing initiatives to ensure adequate supply of rice, vegetables, and other basic commodities.
