The KK! Talk Show on DZRH  will discuss "Till Debt Do Us Part: Gain Financial Freedom and Power Despite the Financial Crisis" on Sept. 24, 2008, Wed., @ 7:30 p.m. (Manila Time)

What is the effect of the US financial crisis on the Philippines and you? Could we still gain financial freedom and power despite the financial crisis?

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported that seven big banks have been adversely affected by the crisis. But BSP Deputy Gov. Nestor Espenilla said that "even in the worst scenario, our local banking system will not be destroyed  . . . the most they can expect is that their net income will be lower this year but they still have other sources of income from loans and  investments."

That is good news. But, if you are one of those sources of loan income, you may have to brace yourself. When a similar financial crisis hit Asia some years back, borrowers suffered from high interest rates reaching almost 30%. Will that happen again? What are the government and the financial sector doing to protect Filipinos, especially those in the "bottom of the pyramid," from this new crisis—on top of the food, energy, and  other crises that have already hit us?

In the United States, Sen. Hilary Clinton, has called for "swift and strong action to stem the growing credit crisis and   offered specific bold proposals, including creating a new version of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation to restore confidence in the market, curbing the most damaging and manipulative trading practices, providing relief to homeowners facing foreclosure, and reasserting competent federal oversight." She also proposed an emergency economic summit to bring together leaders in the government sector and financial institutions, consumer advocates, and all stakeholders to craft a coordinated response to the crisis. She proposed to aggressively pursue mortgage modifications.

On Sept. 24, 2008, Wed., 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) will discuss some of the measures that can help us face the current and any future financial crises—from the introduction of reforms in the banking sector to the application of practical steps by individuals—toward sustainable economic development for all.

Tune in or watch KK! as Director/Host Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia, conducts a talakayan with Cong. Jaime Lopez (chair, Banks and Financial Intermediaries Committee, Philippine Congress, and co-author, proposed Credit Information System Act, which is expected to become a law soon) and Mr. Chinkee Tan (lifestyle trainer and author of the book “Till Debt Do Us Part: Practical Steps to Financial Freedom”).
