The biggest Muaythai (Thai-style kick boxing in layman's terms) championship bouts in the United States were held in Los Angeles, California, last Saturday, September 8th. The event featured three World Boxing Council (WBC) Muaythai world titles, three International titles and three USA national championships.
The event was staged at the Normandie Casino in the City of Gardena, off the Harbor Freeway in Southern California, included a sensational showdown between the WBC Middleweight champion superstar Lamsongkram Chuwatana and top French contender Yohan Lidon.
WBC World Super Featherweight Champion Kaew Fairtex will defend his title against Yamamoto of Japan. The undefeated WBC International Heavyweight Champion Ricardo Van de Boss of Holland will fight the strong, young and determined United States rising star, the Filipino American Rocky Rosario, for the world heavyweight title.
The top International contests include the Welterweight Championship between Brian Carlos of Mexico and Edmond Tarverdyan of the USA. There is also the Lightweight Championship match-up of former Thai champion Kaensak Soh against Fabio Pinca of France. In the Super Featherweight division, the International title will be fought between Hiromasa Masuda of Japan and Mustapha El Farosi of Holland.
Of the four USA national championships on the card, the Welterweight showdown between Michael Mananquil, a Filipino American, and RaKarma Young has attracted enormous interest as both fighters have huge followings. They will meet for the first time in an official WBC championship contest.
Event promoter Dennis Warner said that the super-championship card was the greatest gathering of Muaythai talent ever to be assembled in the United States.
The WBC world championships, with the main sponsor, Singha Beer, will be broadcast on Pay-per-View TV in the United States and televised live to Thailand.
WBC MUAYTHAI Chairman Police Gen. Kovid Bhakdibhumi told the www.mabuhayradio.com that the historic event in Los Angeles was the culmination of three years of progressive development of the WBC Muaythai on the world stage. World championships were already staged in Eastern and Western Europe and Asia.
The WBC has established worldwide Muaythai rankings in 19 weight divisions. The event in the United States will establish the WBC Muaythai as the leading standup martial arts in this country and the world.
