Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely - Lord Acton in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887
Today is September 21, 2007. Exactly 35 years ago, then President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared Martial Law in the Philippines, giving him absolute power, extending his near end term as President of the Philippines, and removing the threat that democracy was to his dictatorship.
President Marcos lifted martial law on January 17, 1981, but only after securing his powers through constitutional ammendments and legislative reforms. In reality, the writ of habeas corpus was still suspended in Western and Central Mindanao.
On August 21, 1983, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, was assasinated.
The Filipino is worth dying for - Ninoy Aquino
Setting off a chain of events that eventually led to the EDSA Revolution, also known as "Peoples Power" on February 22, 1986.
Thus ended the Marcos dictatorship.
