The KK! Talk Show will discuss “A Challenge to Writers: Literature for the Environment” on Wednesday, November 25, @ 1830H (Manila Time) on DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and  Internet
http://dzrh.prepys.com or  (http://dzrh.tripod.com.

W riting on the environment dates back to the 1500s when explorers wrote about their adventures. Later, 19th-century romanticists, such as Thoreau, started to address environmental issues through literature. Now, literature and environment or literature for the environment is a phrase that has been gaining increasing popularity worldwide.

In the Philippines, environmentalists, such as Dr. Nina Galang, have written books on the environment. EARTH Institute Asia’s President, Dr. Cora Claudio, had published a photo book “Our Environment Today” and also maintained for several years a regular weekly column, Eco Line, in the Business Star, which became the Business Daily before it stopped publication. A few other writers have been writing on and for the environment.

The challenge now is for fiction and non-fiction writers, and teachers and students of literature to work together in building a bigger body of literature on and for the environment, which can inspire all to change the way they think and act in addressing environmental issues and concerns. Literature can greatly help shape environmental values and inspire good environmental practices. A novel or poem can help make a more sustainable world.

On Nov. 25, 2009, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time), the multi-media broadcast program, Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!), will initiate a campaign and challenge to develop the Philippine Literature for the Environment. Guests are authors of two of the books that just came off the press: Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Soler, publisher of the Manila Magazine during martial law and author of the new book “For Starters” and  R J Ledesma, editor-in-chief, UNO Magazine; columnist, The Philippine Star; and  author of the new book “I do or I die.” Friends refer to Ricky as a “Renaissance Man,” while RJ represents Gen G, the new generation. Dr. Cora Claudio will moderate the discussion.

Tune or watch KK! through DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and  Internet http://dzrh.prepys.com or  (http://dzrh.tripod.com. Quote of the Day

"I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her."--Ellen DeGeneres
