C HICAGO (jGLi) – If you read this news story on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, it means the Apocalypse that was predicted to take place the day before did not happen or you survived it if it did. And you will be welcoming the birth of Jesus Christ, not his Second Coming!

If you had made plans on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, go ahead, keep them.

This was the assurance of Mark Hammergren, Ph. D., astronomer and director of Astro-Science Workshop of Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois, who told this reporter in an email that “there is no planetary alignment on December 21, 2012 (nor is there EVER a perfect planetary alignment  -- and even if there were, it would have no effect whatsoever on the Earth or its inhabitants.)”

Dr. Hammergren explained that “the gravitational tidal forces on the Earth, or the Sun, or any other planet from a hypothetical lineup would be much, much smaller than the Earth feels from the Moon.”

In the disaster movie, 2012, shown in theaters in 2009, the end-of-the-world scenario opened with the re-alignment of the planets that was supposed to take place on Dec. 21, 2012, as prophesied by author Graham Hancock in his book, Fingerprints of the Gods, who interpreted Michael D. Coe’s remarks in Breaking the Maya Code.

Dr. Hammergren said, “There is no planet headed our way. None, never. The fictional planet “Nibiru” was invented by Zecharia Sitchin, an author, who supposedly taught himself to read ancient Babylonian and Sumerian texts.

“His terrible mistranslations of those ancient texts supposedly revealed accounts of ancient human contacts with aliens from the planet Nibiru.

NEXT PASSAGE OF NIBIRU IN 2900

“N owhere in any of his books does he say that Nibiru would ever collide or make a disastrous close approach to the Earth. In his work, there is no connection to any “2012 disaster” hysteria. In fact, Sitchin wrote that Nibiru’s next passage through the inner Solar system would take place around the year 2900.”

He added, the prediction of fictional Nibiru's collision with the Earth was spawned by Nancy Lieder, a self-proclaimed alien contactee, who first said the disaster was going to happen in 2003. When that prophecy failed to materialize, she postponed the date to 2012. No doubt she will postpone the date once again.

Dr. Hammergren said, “If there were such a planet, it would have been visible to the naked eye for much more than a year, and to telescope for years prior. There is no oncoming planet. Period.

“We know of no astronomical disaster coming our way at any time in the future.

“Best regards, happy holidays, and best wishes for the New Year!”

Even NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) based in Washington, D.C. keeps FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) and answers in its website:

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.

Answer (A):The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

MAYAN CALENDAR ENDS ON DEC. 21, 2012. BUT NEW CALENDAR STARTS

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?

A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Is NASA predicting a "total blackout" of Earth on Dec. 23 to Dec. 25?

A: Absolutely not. Neither NASA nor any other scientific organization is predicting such a blackout. The false reports on this issue claim that some sort of "alignment of the Universe" will cause a blackout. There is no such alignment (see next question). Some versions of this rumor cite an emergency preparedness message from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. This is simply a message, encouraging people to be prepared for emergencies, recorded as part of a wider government preparedness campaign. It never mentions a blackout.

Q: Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth?

A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000. Each December, the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence. And

Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?

A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today, NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

For Christians, the end of the world will be the Second Coming of Christ, which may not be on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 yet. So, go ahead, prepare for the birth of Christ! Merry Christmas! # # #
