Worldwide, the number of deaths from natural disasters has been going up since 2008. Experts attribute this trend to extreme weather brought about by climate change and rapid urbanization with inadequate planning. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that global warming will cause more extreme weather events that could lead to higher risk of deaths to the increasing number of people living in urban areas. Hence, it is imperative to address both climate change and urban development now in order to avert more natural disasters in the future. After several episodes devoted to climate change, Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) will focus on urban development—from planning to execution—on Nov. 18, 2009, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time). Guests are: Architect Felino “Jun” Palafox, Jr., Principal Architect-Urban Planner/Founder, Palafox Associates and Edgardo “Ed” Manda, General Manager, Laguna Lake Development Authority. EARTH Institute Asia President Cora Claudio, Ph.D., will moderate the discussion.
