T he “Climate-Change Challenge” is the Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! talk-show topic on Feb. 4, 2009, Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m. (Manila Time), on DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Channel 9 in Metro Manila and other cable-TV channels nationwide).

"The global financial crisis has exposed the distorted sense of values prevailing in the modern world. None more so than the inference that it is 500 times more important to rescue one discredited New York bank than to rescue developing countries from the prospective impact of climate change. The miniscule assets of the UN Adaptation Fund mock the reality that global warming will impact poorer countries harder and sooner than the richer countries which are responsible (for it). Whatever the state of the world economy, this moral predicament demands international cooperation and resource transfer on an unprecedented scale." (www.OneWorld.net)

Unfortunately, such resource transfer may not be forthcoming in the near future. The Philippines could be one of the worst-hit countries by the adverse impact of climate change for many reasons (e.g., high poverty level and dependence on climate-sensitive agricultural productivity). Hence, we better face the climate change challenge together now!

Two major strategies for tackling climate change are: mitigation (tackle the causes of climate change, e.g., reduce greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation (minimize the adverse impact of climate change). But a country cannot apply any of these strategies without the support and cooperation of its citizens. What can we do?

Hear more about climate change and what actions we can and must do to face this most important of all crises that could hit us in Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! on Feb. 4, 2009, Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m. (Manila Time), on DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Channel 9 in Metro Manila and other-cable TV channels nationwide). On the Internet, it can be accessed at http://dzrh.tripod.com or http://dzrh.prepys.com.

This episode will feature 40 minutes of a new special video production of the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change with Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes as executive producer and Dingdong Dantes and Nikki Gil as hosts. Joining them are several scientists and local government officials. Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia president, will introduce this special feature and conduct the usual segments of the program, e.g., Quiz for the Day.
