"Investing for Peace in 2010 and Beyond: Some Strategies" on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. (Manila Time) on KK! Talk Show on DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and Internet http://dzrh.prepys.com or (http://dzrh.tripod.com.

The ever thoughtful business leader Washington Sycip sent friends a 2009 Christmas card showing a seven-layered colorful cake, each layer representing a step for building success for poor countries. An arrow points to the starting point, economic freedom, on the bottom layer. Then it goes up to the six upper layers—basic education to eradicate poverty, microfinance: credit for the poor, rural health, reduction of poverty and increased per capita income, political freedom (“gradually”), and democracy—only when people do not need to sell votes.

We have imagined the cake being baked, then being enjoyed by Filipinos on a table—a solid table or foundation which represents peace. Studies have shown that peace is a powerful factor in the attainment of economic freedom and growth for a nation.  A research at the University of Sydney in Australia concluded that a “1-point improvement in a nation’s Global Peace Index score adds 1.49 percentage points to its annual economic growth.”

Some will say it is a chicken-and-egg situation—which comes first--economic freedom or peace? Or shouldn’t they go together? Any investment to be effective must be for both economic freedom and progress and the attainment of peace. How can it be done? Hear some strategies through the multi-media broadcast program, Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!), on Jan 6, 2010, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time), as Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia, Inc. converses with EARTH Institute Trustee Ella Antonio, president, Brain Trust, Inc. and Project Coordinator, Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Plan Project, and Former Senator and now educator Nikki Coseteng, president/CEO, Diliman Preparatory School.

KK! Is accessible through DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and Internet http://dzrh.prepys.com or (http://dzrh.tripod.com.
