Last Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the Philippine Climate Change Act of 2009 (RA 9729). It aims to “tackle climate change in both the short-and-long terms, for the benefit of Filipinos today and for Filipinos yet unborn,” she said.

The new law creates the Climate Change Commission, an independent and autonomous policy-making body which shall coordinate, monitor and evaluate programs and action plans that will address climate change. The four-member Commission, chaired by no less than the President, will be organized within 60 days from the effectivity of the law. An Advisory Board will be composed of representatives of government agencies, business, academe, non-governmental organizations, and disaster-prone communities.
