T he KK! Presents “Toward Bringing IPs into our Biodiverse Mainstream” on Wed., Nov.11, @ 1830H (Manila Time) on DZRH-AM Radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and Internet
http://dzrh.prepys.com or (http://dzrh.tripod.com)

One big group in the Philippines that is most vulnerable to disasters and other environmental changes is the indigenous peoples (IPs). The “s” in “peoples “ is not an error. The term, with an “s,” is the official term used by the United Nations to refer to those “with a social or cultural identity distinct from the dominant or mainstream society, which makes them vulnerable to being disadvantaged in the processes of development.” (ADB)

IPs constitute about 15% of the total population of the Philippines and are growing faster than other groups. But they continue to be outside the mainstream society. The challenge is to bring them into the mainstream and provide them opportunities to participate in and benefit from development, without losing their own identity, culture and tribal history. By doing so, we shall also enhance further the already biodiverse mainstream society and environment of the country. We shall also realize that IPs have a significant role to play in preserving our biodiversity.

On Nov. 11, 2009, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time), Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) will focus on IPs and will discuss the results of the first Philippine Tribal Games, a major initiative to preserve tribal history. Guests are: Col. Jeff Tamayo (Project Director, Philippine Tribal Games; Board Member, Philippine Olympic Committee;  and President, Philippine Soft Tennis Association), Dr. Filiberto Pollisco (Policy and Programme Development Specialist, ASEAN Center for Biodiversity); Lito Policarpio, (Councilor, Bamban, Tarlac) and Vergel Sanchez, Aeta Leader from Sta. Rosa, Bamban, Tarlac. EARTH Institute Asia President Dr. Cora Claudio will moderate the discussion.

Tune or watch KK! through DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and Internet http://dzrh.prepys.com or  (http://dzrh.tripod.com.
