T he “Pinay Power for Sustainability” will be discussed on Wed., Feb. 17, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. (Manila Time) on the KK! Talk Show on DZRH-AM radio (666 in Metro Manila, other kHz nationwide), TV (Ch. 9 in Metro Manila, other cable TV channels nationwide), and Internet http://dzrh.prepys.com or (http://dzrh.tripod.com

Many refer to sustainable development, or simply sustainability, as the type of development with three pillars—environmental protection, social equity and progress, and economic development. That is the basis of the new business battle cry—“Aim for the Triple Bottom-line”, which we refer to as the three Ps—People, Planet, and Profit. But we, at EARTH Institute Asia, have added to those three Ps two more critical ones—Person and Peace. Now we are adding “Pinay Power”—with double P!

Filipino women have played a major role in nation-building, especially in environmental protection, in the Philippines. Many say that “women in Philippine society have always enjoyed a greater share of legal equality” compared with their counterparts in other Southeast Asian countries. But what about their situation in other countries where more than two million Filipino women work?

The National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women, referring to the 2008 statistics, said that Filipina women abroad are “generally accorded with low regard or even get discriminated because 54.7 percent of the total female Overseas-Filipino Workers (OFWs) were laborers and unskilled workers. The result is that remittances from female OFWs worldwide were relatively lower than their male counterpart.”

It is, thus, noteworthy when some Filipino women not only excel professionally in foreign countries but also contribute significantly to the upliftment of other Filipino women and the sustainability of their host countries, while continuing to help the Philippines develop more sustainably as well. Such is the case for some of the outstanding women that Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! will feature in February and March, the Women’s Month.

T une in/watch Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) on Feb. 17, 2010, Wednesday, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time), as Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia, converses with two of the "Most-Influential Filipino Women in the United States:" Ms. Marily Mondejar,  president , Filipina Women's Network (FWN) and Executive Board member, Leadership California, and pediatrician and lyric soprano Dr. Arlene Marie "Bambi" Antonio-Lorica, FWN director. Both are multi-awarded Filipino Americans who wield their "Pinay Power for Sustainability."

NEWS FLASH: Atty. Loida Nicolas-Lewis will join the KK! broadcast. She is the chair & CEO, TLC Beatrice, LLC; founder/president, Lewis College, Sorsogon City; and chairman emeritus, National Federation of Filipino-American Associations (NaFFAA).
