C HICAGO (jGLi) – Like a boxer moving up in weight, a Filipino-American third grade school girl competed last Friday, Jan. 28, in a school-wide Spelling Bee competition in Fairbanks, Alaska, placing third in a field composed of 30 contestants among them three grades her senior.

Angel Haven Rey, eight, misspelled the word “SQUACKY, instead of the right word, “SQUAWKY,” that relegated her to third place. Her proud father, Ronald L. Rey, said, “Hindi niya kasi alam ang word, pero yong question doon sa nanalo kayang kaya niya.” (She did not  know the word. But she knew the word posed on the winner.)

Rey, a U.S. serviceman inside Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, said “'Kala ko nga mahihirapan siya kasi third grade lang siya. Pero kayang kaya niya yung mga mahihirap na words. Kailangan lang niyang ma-familiarize o mabasa niya ito.” (I thought she would have difficulty in competing because she is only on the third grade. But she breezed thru difficult words. She only needs to familiarize herself with the words or she has to read them to know them.). His daughter attends Crawford Elementary School located inside Eielson Air Force Base.

He said this was the first time that his Angel Haven took part in a Spelling Bee. He is now buying her flashcards that she can carry with her as she prepares as one of the top three finishers from her 281-student public school to represent her school for the Spelling Bee competition in the entire Fairbanks on Feb. 28.

Angel Haven, Tyler Klein, fifth grade, second place; and Alex McVay, sixth grade, first place, will represent their Crawford Elem School at Fairbanks North Star Borough for District Spelling Bee contest that will be held at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.

Angel Haven was born in Palm Beach, Florida to her parents, Ronaldo L. and Contessa Rey, both natives of Manila, Philippines. Angel Haven has a little sister, Ashley Kristen. Ronaldo Rey is son of Rolando and Antonia Lariosa-Rey of Sorsogon City in the Philippines. (lariosa_jos@sbcglobal.net)
