T wo Filipino medical doctors – an elderly couple – are in hot water for tax evasion. The 71-year-old husband may have his license as physician and surgeon cancelled if the petition filed last week by the executive director of the Medical Board of California is granted by the Board. In that petition, Federico G. Quevedo is accused of having been convicted of a crime and of committing corrupt and dishonest acts. He and his wife, ophthalmologist Eduardita Quevedo, 66, were arrested in April at their home on charges related to tax evasion.

Medical Board Wants License of Filipino Physician Revoked

T ORONTO - The Attorney General of California has asked the state's Medical Board to nullify or suspend the license of a Filipino physician in Los Angeles following his conviction of a crime and for corrupt and dishonest acts, according to documents made available to The Filipino Web Channel.

Federico G. Quevedo of Sherman Oaks was already convicted of two counts of tax evasion in June 2010. Earlier on, in 2005, he also did not file tax returns for his income as medical director of Magnolia General Medical Center in L.A.

In a complaint filed with the Medical Board of California last week (Dec. 20, 2010), Linda K. Whitney, in her official capacity as the board's executive director, asked that Quevedo's license as a physician and surgeon, which expired in April 2010, be revoked or suspended.

Whitney also asked the Board to cancel, suspend or deny approval of Quevedo's authority to supervise physician assistants.

If respondent (Quevedo) is placed on probation, she asked the Board to order Quevedo to pay the costs of probation monitoring.

Q uevedo, 71, graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1967. He got his license to practice in California in July 1969.

Earlier news reports said Quevedo and his wife, ophthalmologist Eduardita Quevedo, 66, were arrested in April 2010 at their home on charges that they filed false income tax returns in 2003 and 2004.

"The couple were convicted in 1999 on the same charges, but didn’t serve time in jail because they paid the tax board more than $150,000 in restitution," the news report said, quoting Brenda Voet, a state Franchise Tax Board spokeswoman.

Eduardita Quevedo (nee Eduardita Eolani Vicencio) also graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1964 and got her license to practice in California in May 1970. # # #
