P erhaps the U.S.A. ought to celebrate two Thanksgiving Days. Maybe President Biden can make the move of recognizing the first Thanksgiving Day made by Spanish settlers with their new friends composed of Native-American Indians (NAI) near what is now St. Augustine, FL, in April 1571. For want of a better name, perhaps the POTUS must designate it (by way of an Executive Order) as the "Hispano-NAI Thanksgiving Day."
Then Americans can still celebrate the (second) Thanksgiving Day that can be designated the "Anglo-Saxon Thanksgiving Day" in November 2023.
This was what this journalist (who has been dubbed a "serious student of history") wrote about the "First Hispano-NAI Thanksgiving Day" in his article published in his column by the Philippine Daily Mirror of New York City: https://www.philippinedailymirror.com/floridians-must-remember-their-history-as-they-recover-and-rebuild-from-calamities/
QUOTE. Yes, five decades earlier. A University of Florida report says, "Before the Pilgrims, the ancestors of modern-day Floridians celebrated the "real" first Thanksgiving” in 1571.
Also, it says that “The nation’s real first Thanksgiving took place more than 50 years earlier near the Matanzas River in St. Augustine, Florida, when Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and 800 soldiers, sailors and settlers joined local Native Americans in a feast that followed a Mass of Thanksgiving, according to Kathleen Deagan, distinguished research curator emerita of historical archaeology at the museum, located on the University of Florida campus."
Numeriano Bouffard brought this fact to the members of the "Filipino Hispanidad” Messenger group that he set up on Facebook. Mr. Bouffard is also the founder-and-prime mover of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida and the FPACC Foundation, Inc. (FPACC is the acronym of the Federation of Philippine-American Chambers of Commerce.) Both not-for-profit entities are based in Orlando (FL). UNQUOTE.
Again, this student of history must state for the record that the Hispano-NAIndian Thanksgiving Day was not marked with massacres of the native inhabitants before, during and after the first Thanksgiving Day in "La Florida" in 1571.
On the other hand, the "Anglo-Saxon First Thanksgiving Day" was allegedly accompanied by massacres of the native population by some of the Anglo-Saxon pilgrims.
