4 strong quakes rock RP By ELLALYN B. DE VERA and FREDDIE G. LAZARO July 24, 2010, 9:03pm Four successive earthquakes – magnitudes 6.9, 7.1, 7.1, 6.0 – jolted the country, particularly Mindanao, on Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quakes at magnitude 7.3, 7.6, 7.4., and 6.5, respectively. Phivolcs said the 6.9 magnitude quake was felt at about 6:08 a.m., with its epicenter located 94 kilometers southwest of Cotabato City with a depth of 599 kilometers. Intensity 2 was felt in Surigao City and General Santos City. Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin. The second quake was measured at magnitude 7.1 and was located 97 kilometers southwest of Cotabato City with a depth of 570 kilometers. Intensity 2 was felt in Butuan City and Surigao City. Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity 4 in General Santos City; Intensity 3 in Davao City and the towns of Padada, Malita and Sta. Maria in Davao del Sur; Intensity 2 in Matanao, Davao del Sur; and Intensity 1 in Midsayap, North Cotabato. Based on Phivolcs scale, an Intensity 4 earthquake is considered as moderately strong and felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. “Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard,” the Phivolcs earthquake intensity scale cited. The third quake was recorded at 7:15 a.m, also measuring magnitude 7.1. Its epicenter was located 98 kilometers southwest of Cotabato City with a depth of 638 kilometers. Phivolcs said the quake, which was tectonic in origin at a depth of 638 kilometers, could have been caused by the deformation of subducted slab of the Molluca Sea Plate. Intensity 4 was reported in Tanjay City and San Jose City in Negros Oriental; Intensity 3 in General Santos City, Lingig, Surigao del Sur, San Jose and Hantic, Antique; Intensity 3 in Irosin, Sorsogon and Sorsogon City; and Intensity 2 in Cotabato City, Kidapawan City, Dipolog City, Tacloban City, Davao City, Legaspi City, Cagayan de Oro City, Cebu City, Dumaguete City, Manila, and Antipolo. The fourth quake was recorded at 1:34 p.m. at magnitude 6.0. It was located 121 kilometers southeast of Sultan Kudarat with a depth of 592 kilometers. Phivolcs said there were no reports of damage to property or casualties due to the earthquake. However, it warned the residents of aftershocks. Earthquakes are frequent in the Philippines because of several active fault lines in the country, noting that Phivolcs record earthquakes almost every day. The country is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions encircle the basin of the Pacific Ocean. (With a report from PNA)
