T here are reports that some executives of the television network GMA-7 want people to use “MAG” as the initials of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The TV executives say that in most colleges, professors go by the students’ family name when the roll call is made.


The GMA-7 people say that when Mrs. Arroyo took up courses in Economics and Management at the Ateneo de Manila, she was already married and her professors used “MAG” (for Macapagal-Arroyo, Gloria) as her initials.


This move to change Gloria Arroyo’s initials supposedly came from the GMA-7 executives as many Filipino-American subscribers think wrongly that the network is owned by the former President. As this initials-change initiative develops, some Filipino-American community leaders welcome the suggestion of the GMA-7 executives. They say that calling Mrs. Arroyo by her new initials, MAG, would not only correct the misimpression that she owns the GMA-7 network but it will also make it easier for Filipinos to address her properly. Many Filipinos, especially Overseas Filipinos, like to call Mrs. Arroyo as “MAGnanakaw.” # # #
