G loria Macapagal-Arroyo will suffer the same fate as the ousted President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras if she insists on extending her stay in power beyond 2010, the opposition warns.

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay issued the warning amid reports of a plan to use military generals to push for Charter change, which could result in a term extension for Mrs. Arroyo or her assumption as prime minister in a parliamentary government. He is the president of the United Opposition (UNO).

*T he MabuhayRadio.com learned also that pundits and wags in Manila are having a field day in coming up with new jokes about Mrs. Arroyo and her reaction to the Honduran coup d’etat. The latest buzz is that President Arroyo has dumped all her pajamas and vowed not to wear one. This was after Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a military coup on Sunday and arrested in his pajamas at the presidential palace by soldiers wearing face masks. There are reports also that say that Mrs. Arroyo’s office is preparing an Executive Order that would make it illegal for Filipinos, especially soldiers, to buy and wear face masks. Then there are jokes that say that the Arroyo Family and their cronies have stopped using Honda vehicles and motorcycles, as they have become allergic to anything that reminds them of Honduras. The apparent boycott by the Arroyos of Honda vehicles is happening despite the report that the favorite car of the Cabalen supporters of Mrs. Arroyo is the “Onda Haccord."

M ayor Binay said the plan would fuel unrest within the military and galvanize opposition to the Arroyo administration.

“Ms Arroyo should view the events in Honduras as a wake-up call. She should not test the patience of the people, especially the military with the supposed plan to force the current Armed Forces chief into early retirement to pave way for a die-hard Gloria loyalist,” he said.

Humorists report that Mrs. Arroyo has dumped all her pajamas and vowed not to wear one. This was after she learned that Honduran President Zelaya was arrested in his pajamas at the presidential palace by soldiers wearing face masks. Mrs. Arroyo’s office will issue an Executive Order that would make it illegal for Filipinos, especially soldiers, to buy and wear face masks.

Mrs. Arroyo has survived two military major uprisings that saw rebel soldiers take over hotels in the Makati financial district on July 27, 2003, and on Nov. 29, 2007. An alleged coup plot in February 2006 was allegedly foiled.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a military coup on Sunday, following months of tensions over his bid to lift presidential term limits through constitutional amendments. He was arrested in his pajamas at the presidential palace by soldiers who were wearing face masks.

President Zelaya, whose current term ends in January 2010, insisted on holding a referendum on Sunday in defiance of the courts and Congress.

Mayor Binay said speculations of a ‘’self-coup’’ within the military leadership — in which generals from Philippine Military Academy Class 1978 would be given key positions this year — had been floating in recent months. The PMA Class of 1978 has made Mrs. Arroyo an honorary member of the class.

The plan, code-named “Operation August Moon,” will reportedly take place in two months, Mayor Binay said.

“A plan to consolidate her hold on the military leadership would be a logical part of a larger plan to stay in power beyond 2010,” the mayor said. # # #

"I've been doing the Fonda workout: the Peter Fonda workout. That's where I wake up, take a hit of acid, smoke a joint, and go to my sister's house and ask her for money."--Kevin Meaney
