T he secular world makes little room for the values and beliefs of the Christian, which gives us even more reason to be like Jesus in all that we do. Think of the heroes that stand out in your mind, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., John Paul II. These are clearly not examples of people with worldly success. Each of them refused to succumb to the ways of the world.

Jer 11:18-20
Ps 7:2-3, 9bc-10, 11-12
Jn 7:40-53

John 7:40-53 When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." (41) Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? (42) Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" (43) So there was a division among the people over him. (44) Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. (45) The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" (46) The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" (47) The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? (48) Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? (49) But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." (50) Nicode'mus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, (51) "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" (52) They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." (53) They went each to his own house.

During his ministry, Jesus very drastically distinguishes himself. There is something different and special about him. With each miracle, the people come to know that Jesus truly is the Christ, the Messiah, the Lord. Even the men who seek to condemn Jesus say: "Never before has anyone spoken like this man," clearly acknowledging that Jesus was someone who could not be ignored.

We too must be like Jesus. The secular world makes little room for the values and beliefs of the Christian, which gives us even more reason to be like Jesus in all that we do. Think of the heroes that stand out in your mind, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., John Paul II. These are clearly not examples of people with worldly success. Each of them refused to succumb to the ways of the world. They turned their gaze higher; they all took on the body of Jesus.

Jesus’ lifelong message was simple, straightforward and profound: “love one another as I have loved you.” How simple, yet how difficult it can be! We need to incorporate this love into the very core of our being. During times when it is especially hard, we need to be honest with ourselves and with the Lord by praying through these difficulties.

We are in the heart of Lent, inching closer and closer to Easter. Let us make it a prayerful journey to the glorious resurrection and continue to be witnesses of Christ’s love and merciful power. In doing so, we might just change the world.

Father, help us to be your other self here on Earth. Please help us to imitate your powerful love. Amen

Songs of Faith

Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise – James 5:13

My mother has always said, "Be careful what songs you teach to children. Once they learn a song, the words will be a part of them forever."

I was especially enriched as a child. Choir rehearsals were held in our home. Hearing music wafting through my bedroom, I would creep quietly past chairs set up for the choir members to squeeze behind the couch where I could listen.

Alas, inevitably I would feel Mom tugging on my leg to shoo me back to bed. But even from under my covers, I could hear great hymns of faith praising God, such as,

"Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!"

Thank you, Lord, for songs of faith that filled my life!
