A n "ally of the United States" was how the White House referred to the Philippines in an announcement on Friday about the visit of Philippine President Benigno Aquino. He will meet with President Obama, which seems to be good enough for Mr. Aquino. But Mr. Aquino's visit is simply denominated by the White House as a visit, which is neither official nor state visit. That's how the U.S. treats an ally?

President Obama to Meet with President Aquino During Visit in June

T ORONTO - Philippine President Benigno Aquino will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama during his visit in Washington on June 8, the White House officially announced on Friday.

"The President looks forward to discussing with President Aquino the close strategic, economic and people to people ties" between their two countries, and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, the White House said in a press statement furnished The Filipino Web Channel.

As the Philippines and China appear to be increasingly hostile over the Scarborough shoal dispute, President Aquino's visit takes on added significance.

The White House, in an apparent assurance to President Aquino, said  "The Philippines is a long-standing friend and ally of the United States". # # #
