V isiting Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) will finally experience in her life a boycott by some members of the Filipino-American media for her refusal to conduct a press conference with them. President Arroyo arrives on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, and is scheduled to meet with some publicity-seeking Filipino-American community “leaders” and the Fil-Am press. Her Excellency will meet at least with the Fil-Am “journalists,” who cannot afford to antagonize her Administration and, thereby, lose freebies from the national flag carrier and ad placements by state-owned companies. She will face also a protest rally in front of the hotel venue by Filipino-American youth who detest the dire situation in the homeland, which is perennially beset by poverty, ignorance, corruption, human-right violations and what not.

PGMA will learn perhaps for the first time that the insofar as American citizens of Philippine descent and the Overseas-Filipino Fourth Estate (OFFE) are concerned, Planet Earth has an Overseas-Filipino Nation (OFN) of more-than 8.50-million mortals and many of them do not respect her because of her image as the most-corrupt Filipino President the homeland ever had. Many of the Filipino “citizens of the world” would not waste their time in attending official functions for Her Excellency because of her tainted reputation.

Her Excellency would not want to meet with the idealistic Overseas-Filipino journalists for they are not beholden to her Administration or for that matter with the corrupt Philippine Establishment. She would not want to hear their questions and much more want to answer them with honest replies.

If I were Her Excellency’s Press Secretary, I would invite at least the presidents of the Justice for Filipino-American Veterans (JFAV), Gabriela (GABnet), the Bayan, the Kabataang Maka-Bayan (KMB) and their allied Fil-Am organizations in American campuses to meet with her. These youthful Fil-Am leaders are like the wind, as they bring breaths of fresh air and bright ideas on how the Filipino homeland can rid itself of the various social cancers. But Her Excellency would not of course want to meet the idealistic youth and listen to them.

And yes, PGMA will finally experience the flair, if not the style, of an American protest rally in pursuit of the people’s right to free speech and peaceful assembly. Her Excellency must learn that her government cannot deprive the Filipino people of their basic right to assemble peaceably in protest of any perceived injustice or corrupt act.

In a final note, Her Excellency should have taken advantage of this third trip to the United States this year to bid goodbye to her presidency. Whether PGMA likes it or not, she is a lame duck. If she extends her presidency under the guise of a change of the form of government – from presidential to parliamentary – she will become the pariah of the industrialized world, the United States included. Here are some articles that state why PGMA will remain as President only up to June 30, 2010, if not even sooner:
