KK! Talk Show to Discuss Environmental Technolgies (ET) on Wednesday,
Oct. 29, 2008, Wed., 6:30 p.m. (Manila Time), on DZRH

T he financial crisis affecting the world gives added importance to the word "sustainable." Are current banking and other financial practices sustainable? Is business as usual sustainable? Is our lifestyle sustainable?

In the environment field, the growing concern for environmental responsibility has prompted an increasing interest in new, sustainable environmental technologies (ETs) for addressing environmental challenges, e.g., pollution. As a result, the global environmental technology sector continues to experience strong growth despite. It is "expected to eventually leave traditional industries in the dust, including the automotive and plant engineering sectors."

In the Philippines, the ET industry is a sunrise industry. The challenge is to either develop or buy the most appropriate, sustainable ET for each application. But, whether we produce or buy it, each ET must be verified and applied well.

Nurturing the ET industry and choosing the best ETs for the sustainable development of the country requires collaboration of companies, universities, research laboratories, government, as well as the general public who is affected by ETs in various ways, including the fact that the ET sector can provide jobs.

What challenges and opportunities do ETs offer? Where are the areas for growth for the Philippines? How do we verify that an ET is good? What are some of the initiatives being taken on or related to ETs in the Philippines and in other countries, e.g., Canada and the US? What additional measures are needed?

Hear answers to these and other questions on Oct. 29, 2008, Wed., 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., as Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) discusses ETs with Engr. Rey Esguerra (Supervising Research Specialist, ETV Program, Dept. of Science and Technology)  and visiting experts David Byro (Environmental Scientist/Regional Small Business Liaison Officer,  Environmental Assessment and Innovation Div.,  U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) and Dr. Vicky Sharpe (President and CEO, Sustainable Technology Development Ctr.
