"The Social Pillar of Sustainability: From Womb to Tomb" Is KK! Topic on Aug. 13, 2008,

Wed., 7:30 p.m. (Manila Time) on DZRH -AM Radio

here do you stand on the bill "Reproductive Health, Responsible Parenthood, and Population Development Act of 2007" and on the subsidies to the poor, the "Katas ng VAT" subsidies?

These measures have major impacts on the social pillar of sustainable development, what we refer to as "Kalahatan"  in our four-pillar paradigm of sustainable development: the Katauhan, Kalahatan, Kalikasan, and Kaunlaran.

Worldwide in the past, the social pillar received less attention than the economic development or Kaunlaran pillar. Fortunately, the situation is changing. More emphasis is now being placed on the social pillar and on what both government and business can do to strengthen it.

In the Philippines, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), in tandem with the Department of Education and the Department of Health, leads in attending to the social pillar and the social development and progress of the country. Its programs provide social measures and services to Filipinos, from "womb to tomb."

The Reproductive Health and Population Bill and the subsidies to the poor are two controversial social measures that are now being discussed (in the case of the bill) or being implemented (in the case of subsidies). Where do some of our social development leaders stand on these measures, and why? What are the other measures and programs being implemented or planned by the DSWD and other organizations on the social pillar of sustainability? How will these affect you? How can you participate in these programs?
